Duluth Business University, Student Article "Made" by the Lake
Here's something that is "made" by the lake; an article by one of my DBU students. Since "Made By the Lake" refers to Lake Superior and the student chose Canada as the country in her article, I thought it would be fitting to publish it here.
As an online instructor for Duluth Business University in Duluth Minnesota, I have the great pleasure of reading what I think make for great articles from my students. My question to my student was to Select a country your current employer or a future employer might do business in. Then do a bit of research of the business culture for the country selected. Finally state any specific do’s and do not’s for nonverbal communication. Here is what one student presented. I hope you enjoy it. It's a quick and interesting read.

Non-Verbal Global Communication
I learned that a successful communication while performing business with Canada has many aspects to give great attention to Canadian etiquette, manners, and demeanor to show respect. The first improvement that could be beneficial to comply with non-verbal communication when performing business transactions with Canada would be to remember that Canadians and Americans do have different business culture expectations.
The www.worldbusinessculture.com website had explained that there is a common culture between Americans and Canadians. I would also improve some non-verbal communication skills by making sure research is done to maintain cultural background and update change knowledge. Canadian workspace shows non-verbal communication aspects that are shown to have a group setting, because all, no matter their level of expertise, are expected and encouraged to share ideas and thoughts. There has been great emphasis on the fact that Canada expects a classic wardrobe, consisting of basic colors and conservativeness.
They are a culture made up of many cultures and diversities. The French Canadian culture is one of the largest added cultures, and when doing business with a company that has French Canadian employees, one must remember to always include a French translation into any and all literature. There is also a great emphasis on showing emotions or not showing certain emotions. They do not believe in showing or expressing anger, racism, impatience, or aggression. There must be a point to be made on punctuality, so as to not show disrespect when doing business.
When performing face to face meetings with Canadians one should remember to have a firm handshake, make good eye contact, and remember to be confident. There are differences between French Canadians and Canadians not of French relation. This must be known so as to implement the correct responses with non-verbal communications of each, and always remembering that there are many different cultures within Canadian businesses, so some extra attention may need to be made to accomplish professionalism to fit those different cultures, also. There is much one needs to research to become adequately informed to perform successfully with global business.
